Maddie’s Cedar Rapids Basketball Tourney Road Trip

a.k.a. the Poopy’s Fiasco

My lovely daughter Maddie participated in a Mid Winter 7th and 8th grade Basketball Tournament in Cedar Rapids IA. Yes, that’s IA as in Iowa and yes, that’s Mid Winter as in January. Temperature a frigid -1 degree Fahrenheit! I’m always up for a good game of basketball and Cedar Rapids is only 3 hours away, all highway driving, so off we went – it was awesome. The girls played great and a good time was had by all. Sunday morning came and the cars started in the -3 degree weather. So we are still on the right path.

Lisa and I made our obligatory stop at Iowa 80 – World’s Largest Truck Stop. Really, a neat place you should check it out if its on your that way. (Nice bathrooms)

Other than being terribly cold out, the roads were good and we were in no hurry. That’s how all the fun starts.

As we crossed the Mississippi River on I-80, I see an exit sign that says Savanna and I think,  Poopy’s! For those of you who haven’t heard of it, it is the biggest biker destination in Illinois. I’ve heard wonderful things about the place and we were starting to get hungry and heck it’s only 47 minutes out of our way.

Route 84 is a leisurely road that rolls along the Mississippi and was really quite pleasant. The views, even in the deep freeze of January, were definitely worth the drive. I can only imagine that in the summer, on a motorcycle, they would be one of the reasons it’s such a rider’s destination.

By the time we got there, we were both quite hungry and not ready for what we found.

Below is a picture of Poopy’s. When you look at it, picture a snow covered parking lot without a car in sight.

Even though the GPS said, you have reached your destination, I drove right by it not believing Siri got it right. Little did we know, they are closed for the month of January. (read major disappointment on my face here)

Now, I know it doesn’t look like much from this picture but we went back and drove around the property and it was quite impressive. I understand how it can be the destination place for a Saturday drive. I know we’ll be back come summer. I’ve linked both Iowa 80 Truckstop andPoopy’s websites. Click on their names and check them out.

At this point we were starving and wandering through western IL looking for a place, any place, to eat. In Lanark IL, some 18 miles east of Savanna,we found Brothers Inn. The parking lot looked busy, always a good sign, and best of all it was open. Have I mentioned it was cold.

The people were nice and the food exceeded expectations. Lisa had a generous piece of spiral cut ham and some delicious candied yams. I had the roast pork with stuffing AND mash potatoes with gravy (a regular carb-fest). Both came with soup and salad bar for $8.95!

Sometimes you find a pearl in the strangest places. All in all, the trip made for a relaxing day.

  1. I’ve heard that if I had simply turned left, west, off of 84 I would have been in downtown Savanna and seen all sorts of interesting places. So now we have another adventure to go on. More to follow…
